Surrender to the Process
or 8 Steps to Change
or 8 Steps to Change
Life is full of change. We learn new things. We come to cross-roads. It's never ending.
Someone once said to me if you aren't growing, you're dying.
So we find our lives are in a constant state of transformation.
This can happen quickly, or as a slow and barely visible transformation.
How we move through change will dictate whether change is joyous or stressful.
“The creative process is a process of surrender, not control.”
Change is a creative process. You are taking something and making it into something else, much like taking tiny clay pots and turning them into wind chimes.
The challenge arises from trying to control the changes. We try to control how fast we change. We try to control the process of change. When we do this, it can feel like we are pushing against a brick wall.
This can be very frustrating, because for some reason, that brick wall isn't budging!
There's a simple solution to this. Stop pushing!
Take a step back. Be like water and take the path of least resistence. Look around for the door or the path that will take you through or around that brick wall.
Give yourself permission to flow with change.
Just for fun, let's say the change you are going to make is to be driving around Los Angeles instead of New York.
You're still in New York. You've been given a map to get from New York to Los Angeles.
You take 30 seconds to look at the map across the country, put it down, and immediately begin driving around like you are already in Los Angeles.
For some reason, Walt Disney Concert Hall on South Grand Avenue isn't where it's supposed to be! There's something else there that's not supposed to be there!
The problem is, you're still in New York. To drive as if you're in Los Angeles isn't going to work.
Where would the path of least resistence be?
Pull out the map you received that shows you exactly how to get from New York to Los Angeles.
Go with the process. Flow with the process.
If it means taking out your blinders to help you shift your focus back to the path, then do it!
I know for me if I try to see where I am, the destination, and the path there in once glance my eyes roll into the back of my head almost immediately.
So I put the blinders on. I notice the path immediately in front of me, and begin placing one foot in front of the other.
The funny thing is, when I do it this way, I am constantly surprised at how quickly I arrive at my destination.
Here are your 8 steps to change:
1. Notice where you are.
2. Notice where you want to be.
3. Put your focus on the first step towards your destination.
4. Take things one step at a time.
5. Acknowledge yourself when you complete a step.
6. Take the next step.
7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 until you arrive at your destination.
8. Celebrate your arrival!
You can move through change in a joyful way if you give yourself permission to follow the process.
Just put one foot in front of the other.
